Michael Basman

Mr Basman has accomplished a great deal in organising the world’s largest chess tournament ‘The UK Chess challenge’ and his chess teaching. His many successes include being former joint winner of the British Championship 1973, International master and an inspiring chess author.

Having entered the chess world at a very young age, he has made many contributions to the way chess is played in our time, and developed chess clubs in many schools. Chess isn’t the only field Mr Basman is involved in, have a look out for the dedicated teacher’s Crossword and Chinese chess Tournaments in coming years.

The UK Chess Challenge began in 1996 and was an immediate success, with 700 schools entering, involving approximately 23,000 children. By 2006 numbers competing had more than trebled to 74,000.  The tournament begins every Spring Term, and continues over four stages and eight months. In the first stage children compete week by week in schools all over the UK (currently the number of schools taking part is over 2,000). Every child is able to win amazing prizes, such as badges, gold spots, mascots and trophies. At the final stage of the tournament the top UK Chess players compete for the £2000 cash prize!
