Ealing Juniors are Champions of Division 4 of Thames Valley League!
Today we hosted very strong Richmond D team at Docking Station.
On board 2 Dominika Ociepka confronted a higher graded opponent (160) and after missing a tactical shoot, mated. Board 6 Max Elliott played good game When his opponent made a mistake he won a piece and shortly forced her to resign.
Board 1 Timothy Foster played well against 162 graded opponent but in the middle game he made mistake which cost him the game. 2:1 for Richmond!
Board 3 Jake Liang showed his opening knowledge and tactical skill. He had winning position after 16 moves! Then Jake miscalculated a tactical capture which nearly cost him game, luckily he found the defence and won the end game easily.
Remaining 2 games were very important as we needed a point to draw the match. On board 5 Ananth Vijayakumar faced a solid strong opponent and in the middle game after missing a tactics he lost a piece!
Board 4 Tharshan Kuhendiran played his first game for the team! As he was busy with his exams. Tharshan had slight positional advantage and had at least a draw, but as Ananth was a piece down he needed to win!
It was very lucky ending for Ananth! When his opponent blundered his extra piece and they entered Rook and Bishop ending Ananth with extra pawn. But he had less time and draw agreed. That was very important half point which took pressure from Tharshan as he agreed a draw shortly.
3:3 DRAW for the night gave us total of 7 points and secured the 1st Place in Division 4.
Well done everyone and special thanks goes to our parents for their hard work and time. Congratulations!!!

3.5 : 2.5 WIN against Meadhurst A guarantees promotion
Dear All congratulations! Special thank you to our parents, who supported us throughout the season.
Away match against Meadhurst A team was interesting match. As home team had one players short Board 6 Arvijikh Batkhuu earned important point travelling through the busy traffic from Acton and showing his passion and support for the team.
Board 4 Jake Liang played weaker opponent and won easily. Board 5 Max Elliott made some calculation mistakes and went down.
On board 3 Anna Purvis scored important half point. We needed half a point to draw the match or 1 point to win the match from remaining 2 games.
Board 2 Timothy Foster played exciting game! In the opening had advantage and got winning position ...instead winning easily... In the middle game Timothy decided to sacrifice Queen for bishop and pawn! .. which was a nerve testing half hour for his teammates, for our supporting parents and as well for IM M.Basman, who actively supported out team during the promotion route. After sharp middle game he had 2 extra pawns. Even though he allowed his opponent to Queen! At the end he showed us his skill and technique how to win K+Q+p vs K+Q??! That interesting “show game” finished with Timothy’s victory which secured winning 3.5 points.
Board 1 Ananth Vijayakumar played well against a strong opponent and missed some chances to get equal position. He lost after long fight.
This win secured us to finish at least in top 2 places in Division 4 of Thames valley league.
Well done all. CONGRATULATIONS for your promotion in Division 3!

3.5 : 2.5 WIN against Richmond D
Visit to Richmond Chess club was not easy match for us, but we started well after half an hour on board 3 Timothy  Foster scored first point.
Board 5 Ananth Vijayakumar played well and increased the lead 2 : 0.
Our top board Akshaya Kalaiyalahan faced strong opponent. She played quiet quick tempo and lost. On board 2 Dominika Ociepka made some mistakes in sharp tactical game. Score was 2:2.
Board 6 Haotion Wu in pawn down position offered a draw and his opponent agreed. Last one to finish was  We won the match 3.5 to 2.5.

5 : 1 WIN against Hayes B
Today we hosted Hayes B team at Docking Station. Match started with short delay as both team waited 1 player to turn up through the rush hour traffic.
Ealing Juniors had slight grading advantage bottom boards.
On board 2 Koby Kalavannan easily outplayed his opponent and won quickly. Board 6 Max Elliott used his grading advantage and skill. And he won piece than queen. On board 3 Ananth Vijayakumar  faced unknown strong opponent (according grading database his rapidplay grade was 157 !) But Ananth showed his experience and won in style. Just after hour and half we were 3:0 up.
Our new member Haotion Wu showed his strength and character. In the middle game he had some advantage and the end game was draw with opposite colour bishops. That was very important half point for us to secure WIN of the match.
Board 5 Anna Purvis played probably the best defensive game in her carrier using all her time and forced her opponent to resign when she was 2 piece up.
Board 1 game finished last as Jake Liang played higher graded opponent. And under time pressure his opponent could not convert the piece advantage into full point. Draw was agreed after repetition.
Well done everyone!
That was very good win by all of you as a TEAM. Thanks goes to our parents again for their excellent support.

Undecided match against Harrow C ! - Probably LOST?
Harrow C 3 vs Ealing Juniors 2
Trip to North London was very good “learning experience” for all of us as a whole Team!
We started the match very strong and with clear advantage in all boards! With full confidence and good opening skills. That had been confirmed by quick wins on board 1. Timothy Foster  and board 2 Dominika Ociepka after only 45 minutes. We were 2:0 up!
At that time it looked like we can win 6:0! As on board 3. Jake Liang had winning end game position, on board 4. Ananth Vijayakumar had extra Bishop, Board 5. Anna Purvis had exchange up and extra pawn! On board 6 Lauren Weaver had 2 extra pawns!!!
BUT we did not get the result we were aiming for! After long 2 hour battle our board 3, 4 and 5 LOST their games. And we don’t know the reasons YET?! Only our experienced 3 top players knew very well what happened at that moment. There were distractions, overconfidence, miscalculations and lack of experience! I think it was very important lessons for our England Trio!
Our only hope was Lauren and she played really good game. And here come my own mistake as manager I did NOT explained the league rule to the players. She didn’t realised it was slow game rule, where she should not have any time pressure after 35 moves! She made a mistake just 2 moves before the game was stopped for judication. Now I am analysing the position and looking for win. But it looks very slim we can claim a win.
Result is undecided 3:2 for Harrow c.
Everyone played good chess, only the result wasn’t correct for us this time. We will fight back for the promotion!

Important WIN : Surbiton C 1,5 vs Ealing Juniors 4,5
Tonight Ealing Juniors had one of the most important matches of the season. And we knew that visit to Surbiton C will be though and difficult. They had very similar strong team when they visited us few weeks ago.
We put strongest possible team together and big thanks goes to all our parents who supported us throughout this evening. Also special thanks to our 2 reserves Max Elliott and Anna Purvis.
We had grading advantage on bottom boards. First win came on board 5 where Ananth Vijayakumar outplayed his opponent quickly and 0:1 for Ealing Juniors. Very similar picture was on board 6 where Koby Kalavannan easily won 2 pieces in opening few moves and scored full point. On board 2 Timothy Foster  made tactical mistake and lost. 1:2 or Ealing Juniors.
On board 4 Dominika Ociepka played nice game and check mated her opponent. That secured at least draw for the match!
On board 1 Akshaya Kalaiyalahan had positional advantage and winning combinations. But after a long 2 hour game she had less time than her opponent and accepted draw. And brought match winning half point!
1,5 vs 3,5 for Ealing Juniors.
On board 3 Jake Liang tested his tactical skill against high graded G.Inglis (141). Jake had advantage, when his opponent miscalculated tactics and resigns.
That was the biggest win for Ealing Juniors with 3 points margin!
Now we are in 2nd place with 3,5 points out of 5 games. Our main rivals are Harrow C (4 out 5), whom we will visit in 2 weeks time! More details: http://www.thamesvalleychess.org

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Our first match of the year 2012, was very interesting and testing. We played at home against Surbiton C team. Surbiton Chess Club has a strong connection with most of our players and also the playing ground for some players, maybe that was one of those reasons they sent a strongest possible “C” team to the Docking station
Match started with 25 minutes late as we patiently waited for our visitors to find our new venue.
They had 6 players, but one of them was not eligible to play for the team. That means on board 6 Arvijikh Bathkuu scored full point. Match started 1:0 for Ealing Juniors.
On board 4 Max Elliott played a quick and risky game against D.Morgan (119), and after 20 moves he had lost pawn ending (K+R+p vs K+R+p+p) position. But luckily enough with his confidence he managed to score a point. Slow down Max, but result counts! 2:0 for Ealing Juniors.
Board 5 Lauren Weaver,  played her first game for the team and performed well. Game was equal until her opponent M.Cooper (79) made a tactical mistake, which was used by Lauren to win the game. That guaranteed at least DRAW for the night . Well done Lauren!  3:0 for us.
Now we need only half point from top 3 boards, where we were out graded by 8 to 42 grading points.
On board 2 Anna Purvis returns from her 6 week break and her opponent was 146 graded R.Browne (grading difference 42 points). She played a sharp attacking game and had chance to draw. But in the middle game she made miscalculation and lost. Score 3:1.
Board 1 Timothy Foster tested his tactical skill against high graded M.Hogarth (146). In interesting double edged middle game position Tim didn’t found correct game plan and went piece down. He tried to create king side attack, but eventually lost. Our lead narrowed down to 1 point.
Our only hope was Koby Kalavannan on board 3, who had tough opponent G..Ingus, (38 grading points advantage). Koby played well and had advantage in the middle game, where he had queenside passed pawn. But he couldn’t convert that advantage to a half point.
Koby had big chance to win on time! Until his opponent (only 1 min 40 sec on his clock!) received “illegal” HELP from their captain about his time trouble. Match score 3:3.
Currently we are in 3rd place with 2,5 points out of 4 games. More details: http://www.thamesvalleychess.org

Our second home match performance was good enough to win the match against Meadhurst A team with score 4 : 2.
Because of managers fault we had some miscommunication  about the match, but we managed to get full team with our parents help. I would like to thank you again to all parents for your time and hard work supporting our team.
Match started with 10 minute delay as both team had 1 player short.
On board 1 Masoud Darvish , who stepped in as reserve and played his best. It was good test for him. And lost to a strong opponent and we were 1:0 down. Board 6 Arvijikh Bathkuu made his first game for the team and started well. He was a piece up and got overexcited?! In the middles game he made simple tactical mistake “back rank mate” ! and lost important point. 0 : 2 for visitors?!
On board 5 Koby Kalavannan showed his tactical skill and won a piece in the opening, and finished the game well. Match score 1:2 ?.
On board 4 Anna Purvis played a quality game and won a piece in the middle game. She managed to convert the material advantage to a win. That equalised the match score 2:2
On board 3 we had very experienced Ananth Vijayakumar who came back from his exam break. He had the advantage in the middle game, but it looked a draw end game. His opponent missed the draw chance and Ananth converted it to a full point. That secured us at least a DRAWN match for the night. 3:2 for Ealing Juniors.
Board 2 Timothy Foster played a interesting game and had positional advantage after opening. And under time pressure his opponent could not held his queen side attack.
That was good enough to win the match 4 : 2. Well done all !
Akshaya presenting England in World Youth Championship
Dear all,
I would like to wish all the best and good luck for Akshaya Kalayalahan, one of our leading players, who will play at World Youth Championship 2012, in Brazil.
Next few days we will keep our attention to Caldas Novas, Brazil.

Tonight Koby played his adjourned match against Harrow C team, and finished in style and won without difficulty. As you know we lost the match 2:4.
Tuesday, 1st November 2011 (Report by Sainbayar)
Today we got our first win under our belt as a new team.!
We played our first away match against the Hayes B team. Everybody played well without simple mistakes such as blundering a piece or miscalculating easy combinations.
We won the match with 3.5 points to 2.5.
On board 3 Akshaya Kalaiyalahan “played the best match in her chess career”, how she described it! and we were 1:0 up from the start. Board 2 Dominika Ociepka was too confusing for her opponent and we increased our lead. On board 5 Max Elliott showed his skill and style, scoring an  important point. That secured us at least a DRAWN match for the night.
The hero was newcomer Calum Baker who managed to draw his game in a lost king and pawn ending. That was enough to win the match
On board 4 Adam Averbukh played a long game and lost in the end, although he had the advantage in the middle game. Board 1 Timothy Foster played a fascinating game but under time pressure failed to press his advantage.
Well done all!

The Young Pioneers
This was not the first match of the young Ealing team; they had already played a knock-out encounter against the Kingston 1st Team, with average grading of 175.  Not surprisingly, they had lost 6-0, although after some stubborn resistance.

Now they had a less challenging prospect in the Harrow C team, and indeed, on some they out graded their opponents.  But grade is only a rough indication of performance, and the Ealing players had a tough night.  Here was the line-up on that historic day:

Ealing Juniors                        vs                              Harrow C                                result

1.Timothy Foster, age 14, grade 135                 Alan Marshall     117                   O : 1
2.Dominika Ociepka, age 14, grade 138            J.Dhemrait, Jn    112                    1 : 0
3.Max Elliott, age 10, grade 118                         S. Dhemrait        111                   O : 1
4.Adam Averbukh, age 9, grade 118                  Aran Black         111                   O : 1
5.Anna Purvis, age 10, grade 104                       P Humphry        109                    O : 1
6.Koby Kalavannan, age 9, grade 108                D.Walker            83                   play on

Surprisingly, the young players nearly all obtained good positions from the opening, but it was their weakness in tactics and proneness to blunder, particularly in the middle game when they were searching for a plan to improve their positions.
So the message to the young pioneers is “dig your heels in!”. Click here to read Mike’s full report
